Room×Lab Review · Review updated September 1, 2026

Black-brown/light brown owners like the look, though one owner each reports misaligned holes, a separating back or a warped shelf; across colors, some sides crack

Room×Lab read all 1,342 distinct written IKEA owner reviews of the HEMNES 35 3/8 x 77 1/2-inch bookcase, dated April 23, 2017 through August 29, 2026. IKEA shows the same 4.1 rating and 1,344-rating count on several current color pages, so these reviews cover the bookcase across its current and older finishes, black-brown/light brown among them. Owners write from first assembly through years of use. Each card below names the color that owner bought. We picked recent reviews from five stars down to one, mostly from black-brown/light brown owners, to show the main praise and faults; they are examples, not a tally.

Room×Lab rating: 6.9 out of 10 (medium confidence). Black-brown/light brown owners like the look and wood; one each describes misaligned holes, a poorly fitting back, and short and warped shelves. Across all colors, owners praise the looks, capacity and mostly manageable assembly; split shelf and back-panel durability and weak problem resolution hold the score down.

  • Assembly is usually manageable, but part accuracy matters: 216 favorable mentions; 143 concerns — Across all colors, many owners describe easy builds; concerns name unclear diagrams, misaligned or missing holes, backs that fit poorly in their grooves, and parts owners had to force or adjust.
  • Stability splits owners; leveled, anchored units often felt stable: 119 favorable mentions; 132 concerns — Across all colors, leveled, wall-anchored units often felt stable; concerns include wobble, shelves cut too short, shelf supports that barely engage, warped panels and shelves that dropped.
  • Long-term durability remains the central tradeoff: 33 favorable mentions; 66 concerns — Across all colors, some owners report years of successful use; others report sides that cracked, one within a year, backs that warped, shelf supports that loosened and shelves that collapsed. Few owners say how heavily they loaded their units.

Before buying

Choose this black-brown/light brown HEMNES if you will check every panel and hole, anchor it and keep loads conservative; skip it if you need proven heavy-book longevity or dependable replacement parts—owners report warped and dropped shelves.
