Room×Lab Review · Review updated October 15, 2026
Matte white owners praise the look and generous size but report stubborn flatware marks; chips and cracks appear occasionally across Mercer finishes
Crate & Barrel's 2,591 ratings average 4.4 stars across all Mercer dinnerware, including smaller plates, bowls, mugs, older finishes and posts about other products, and can include ratings without written text. Room×Lab read 2,231 distinct written reviews and kept each finding with the piece and finish the owner named. This review covers matte white, shiny white, grey and blue-rim porcelain and Arctic Blue stoneware dinner plates and, labelled separately, older finishes, used over months to years. Shiny white wear reports don't show how matte white performs, and stoneware reports apply only to stoneware. None says whether its writer was incentivized. We picked the main matte praise, its most common complaint (flatware marks), a breakage, a dishwasher-fit problem and a five-year white-plate account.
Room×Lab rating: 6.5 out of 10 (medium confidence). Matte white owners like the clean, handmade look, sturdy feel and generous size, but repeatedly report flatware marks that resist scrubbing, and one matte plate broke after four months. Chips and cracks appear occasionally across Mercer finishes.
- Utensil marks on matte white: 1 favorable and 8 critical example mentions of matte marks and cleaning; examples, not a total count — Reports run from marks after the first dinner to knife cuts after more than a year. One owner of both finishes sees marks more readily on matte; another matte owner reports good scratch resistance. Some owners say Soft Scrub, Bar Keepers Friend or a magic eraser did not remove the marks.
- Chipping and cracking over years of use: 5 favorable and 7 critical example mentions of chipping, cracking and long use; examples, not a total count — White-plate owners describe five years without chips, or one broken plate across five years of frequent entertaining. Others report a matte plate breaking during cabinet removal after four months, edge chips within months and white dinnerware chipping over eighteen months. An older white-set owner says hard-to-see chips caused nicks and cuts.
- Plate size and household fit: 3 favorable and 6 critical example mentions of size, cabinet and dishwasher fit; examples, not a total count — Matte owners praise the meal capacity, size and weight. Others prefer salad plates for everyday meals, cannot fit the dinner plates in a cabinet or dishwasher, or fit fewer per load. One white-plate owner reports the plates hitting the dishwasher's upper spray arm and now handwashes them.
Before buying
Choose the matte white plate only if flatware marks that scrubbing may not remove won't bother you. Before ordering a set, check that your cabinets and dishwasher fit a plate 10.8 inches across.
