White 8-cube owners praise reachable shelves and flexible bin storage; lingering odor is reported across white 6-, 8- and 12-cube versions

Room×Lab read all 91 distinct written reviews on Crate & Barrel's Rue page. The page's 100 ratings and 4.21 average cover the whole Rue collection, current and older sizes and finishes, not only the white 27-inch 8-cube shown here, and some ratings have no written review. Reviews cover white and natural cube bookcases plus older blue, grey, three-cube and narrow layouts, used in children's rooms, nurseries, playrooms and living spaces, some for several years. Complaints about odor, finish wear, assembly defects and delivery each come from owners of particular versions, and sizes and finishes may differ in construction. The reviews below show white 8-cube praise and an odor complaint from this size, plus a several-year 6-cube account, an odor complaint after more than nine months and an assembly fault from other white sizes; they are examples, not a tally.

Room×Lab rating: 6.3 out of 10 (limited confidence). One white 8-cube owner's child reaches the top shelf, another likes room for different containers, and Rue owners across sizes call it sturdy. The caveats: a strong smell reported by white 8-cube owners, odor lasting weeks to over nine months in other white sizes, and finish wear and assembly defects across sizes.

  • Cubbies organize books, toys and bins, but check oversized items: 10 reviews cited here praise storage or fit and 1 notes a limit; a sample of reviews, not a full count. — White 8-cube owners describe a child reaching books on the top shelf and room for different containers. 6-cube and 12-cube owners describe decluttering and toy storage. An owner of grey and blue 12-cube units says most books fit, but oversized look-and-find books could not stand upright.
  • Persistent odor reports span white 6-, 8- and 12-cube versions: 5 reviews cited here report strong or lasting odor and 1 reports none; a sample of reviews, not a full count. — White 8-cube owners report a strong smell, and one describes gagging and shortness of breath. Among white 6-cube owners, one reports it lasting three weeks and another over a month despite daily ventilation. A white 12-cube owner reports over nine months despite an air purifier. One white 6-cube owner of several years noticed no off-gassing.
  • Owners call it sturdy, but its weight makes handling and returns harder: 7 reviews cited here call it sturdy and 2 find its weight a drawback; a sample of reviews, not a full count. — Owners report sturdiness for white 8-cube, white and natural 6-cube, and older grey and blue 12-cube units, including one white 6-cube still sturdy after several years. That owner finds it a bit heavy. Another found a nearly assembled white 6-cube too heavy to load back into a car for return. Feeling sturdy is not the same as a tip or load test.

Before buying

Choose the white 8-cube for sturdy cube storage if you accept odor risk: its owners report a strong smell, and owners of other white sizes report it lasting weeks to over nine months. Confirm the compartment count, and plan for its weight and wall anchoring.
