Room×Lab Review · Review updated September 28, 2026

Owners of the earlier caster Maxine praise its storage and bar top, but door sag and flawed deliveries keep recurring

Room×Lab read 217 distinct written reviews (2013–2023) from two earlier Maxine listings; Crate & Barrel's 4.77 average from 225 ratings covers both listings, not the current leveler model, which has its own smaller set of reviews. Almost all describe the earlier version on concealed casters. Rolling and floor reports apply only to that version; door, hinge, top, finish and storage reports describe shared design features, so ask Crate & Barrel whether the current model's doors, hinges and frame are built the same way as the caster version. Owners' stated use runs from a few weeks to about five years. One review of an older black predecessor is left out. The reviews below show door, delivery and floor complaints alongside specific praise, including the longest ownership.

Room×Lab rating: 6.9 out of 10 (limited confidence). Owners of the earlier caster Maxine love its compact storage, fold-out bar top and walnut look, but repeated reports of sagging doors, loosening hinges and flawed deliveries hold back durability. The current leveler model has fewer owner reports so far.

  • Storage holds a full bar in a small footprint: 22 favorable mentions of storage and layout; 3 critical, all about glass fit — Owners praise the stemware racks, wine rack, door shelves and drawer, and several say it holds more than they expected. The few critiques concern glass fit: slots too close for larger glasses, stems clashing with bottles below, and glasses knocking together. No one reported running out of space.
  • Door sag and loosening hinges are the repeated complaint: 16 critical and 9 favorable mentions of doors, hinges and latches; not every critical one is sag — On the earlier caster version, owners report doors sagging under bottles within weeks to about a year (once despite following the loading instructions), hinge or latch screws loosening or spinning free, and doors turning hard to close. Some critical mentions are light-loading precautions or doors misaligned on delivery; other owners report firm doors.
  • Sturdy for many owners, but inspect the unit at delivery: 20 favorable and 12 critical mentions about build quality and condition on arrival. — Many owners call it sturdy and well made. Others received misaligned doors or leaves, stains, finish or hardware flaws, or damage. A few needed two or more replacements; one says all four units received were flawed. The door pattern makes slight misalignment obvious. These are individual accounts, so inspect doors, leaves and finish closely on delivery.

Before buying

Choose the Maxine for compact bar storage and a fold-out serving top, but load each door with no more than 30 lb and check door and leaf alignment at delivery: owners of the earlier caster version report doors sagging within weeks to a year.
